JFK Terminal 4 Arrivals: Pickup Points, the Taxi Line, and Meeting Your Driver
Landing at JFK's biggest terminal — how long customs really takes, where the official taxi rank and app-ride zones are, and where a meet-and-greet driver stands.
Terminal 4 is JFK’s giant: Delta’s transatlantic hub plus the longest roster of international carriers on the airport, which makes its arrivals hall the busiest place on the property. It also makes T4 the terminal where a plan matters most — the customs queues are the airport’s longest, and the crowd at the arrivals exit is thick with greeters, relatives, and the occasional chancer who should not be there.
Off the plane: what happens in what order
- Immigration. T4’s passport hall serves multiple widebody arrivals at once. Budget 20 minutes on a quiet morning, over an hour when the evening bank of Europe and Middle East flights lands together. Global Entry members and users of the free Mobile Passport Control app skip the worst of it.
- Baggage claim. Your bags have usually beaten you there after a long immigration wait — one small mercy.
- Customs, then the doors. Past the final check you walk out into the arrivals hall, into a barrier crowd of name signs. This is where a meet-and-greet driver stands, and where every decision about getting to the city plays out.
Taxi: the official rank
Follow the yellow Taxi signs out of the arrivals hall; the rank is directly outside, run by a uniformed dispatcher who loads the queue in order. The line moves faster than it looks — at peak arrival times expect 10–20 minutes.
What you’ll pay: $70 flat fare to anywhere in Manhattan (roughly $90–110 all-in with surcharges, tolls and tip), or the standard meter to Brooklyn, Queens and beyond. The full breakdowns live in our JFK to Manhattan and JFK to Brooklyn guides. The dispatcher can summon accessible vehicles, and boot space realistically caps at two large cases — a family of four with full luggage is two cabs or one booked SUV.
Uber and Lyft: the app-ride zones
Rideshares do not pick up at the terminal curb. T4 has designated app-ride pickup zones outside arrivals, signposted from the exit doors, and the apps themselves show the walking route once you request. Three T4-specific tips:
- Wait until you have your bags before requesting. T4’s customs exit is unpredictable enough that a car requested at the gate will time out.
- Follow the physical signs, not your instinct. The pickup zones involve a short walk, and at a terminal this size guessing costs you ten minutes.
- Match the plate, not the car color. The pickup zone at peak times is a wall of grey SUVs.
Typical fares run $45–75 to Manhattan off-peak and considerably more when the apps decide your 6pm arrival is a surge event.
Pre-booked car: where your driver actually is
Two flavors, and it pays to know which you bought:
- Meet-and-greet: the driver waits inside the arrivals hall, at the barrier just past the customs exit, holding a sign with your name. You walk off the plane, find your name, hand over the luggage trolley. This is the version worth having at T4, where the exit crowd is dense and the walk to any curb is long.
- Curbside pickup: cheaper, and the driver calls or texts once you have your bags, directing you to a signed passenger pickup point outside the doors. Perfectly fine — just keep your phone on roaming before you land.
Either way, give the operator your flight number when booking: T4’s immigration delays are exactly what flight tracking and free waiting time exist for. What flat rates should look like, and what to confirm is included, is covered in the JFK to Manhattan guide.
Train: the AirTrain from Terminal 4
The T4 AirTrain station is connected directly to the terminal — follow the AirTrain signs up from arrivals. From there it is the standard two routes into the city: Jamaica station for the LIRR (fastest into Midtown) and the E, J and Z trains, or Howard Beach for the A train toward Brooklyn and Lower Manhattan. The AirTrain is free between terminals and $8.75 to exit at Jamaica or Howard Beach. Full transit detail, including which route fits which destination, is in the JFK to Manhattan and JFK to Brooklyn guides.
Departing from T4 instead?
The short version for the return trip: T4’s security and Delta bag-drop queues are long at the morning and evening peaks, and the terminal is big enough that gates are a genuine walk. Three hours before a long-haul departure is the boring, correct answer. Arriving by car, “Terminal 4 Departures” is the drop-off your driver wants; arriving by AirTrain, the station connects straight into the terminal.
Fares cited were verified in August 2026 against the NYC Taxi & Limousine Commission and the Port Authority; pickup arrangements reflect Terminal 4 as of the same date. JFK’s rebuild reshuffles signage and roadways with little ceremony — if you land and find something here has moved, tell us and we will fix it.
Frequently asked questions
Which airlines use JFK Terminal 4?
Delta is the anchor, alongside most of JFK's long-haul international carriers — Virgin Atlantic, Emirates, Singapore Airlines, KLM and dozens more. Assignments shift during the airport's rebuild, so confirm the terminal on your booking a day or two before you fly.
Where is the taxi stand at Terminal 4?
Directly outside the arrivals-level doors — follow the yellow taxi signs from the arrivals hall. A uniformed dispatcher manages the queue. Only board at the official rank; anyone offering a ride inside the building is not a licensed driver.
Where do Uber and Lyft pick up at Terminal 4?
At designated app-ride pickup zones outside arrivals, signposted from the exit doors — not at the terminal curb itself. Request the car after you have your bags, follow the signs, and match the plate before getting in. Expect a short walk.
Where does a pre-booked driver meet you at Terminal 4?
With meet-and-greet service, inside the arrivals hall just past the customs exit, holding a sign with your name — the same spot the crowd of greeters occupies. Cheaper curbside pickup means the driver calls you to a signed pickup point outside once you have your bags.
How long does immigration take at Terminal 4?
Anywhere from 20 minutes to well over an hour, worst when several widebodies land together — late afternoon and early evening are the peak. Global Entry and the free Mobile Passport Control app both cut the line dramatically. Tell a pre-booked car service your flight number so they track the delay.
How do I get to another terminal from Terminal 4?
Take the AirTrain, which is free between terminals, from the station connected to the terminal. You exit the secure area when you leave arrivals, so you will clear security again at the next terminal — allow a full hour for any terminal change.
