  1. Rockefeller Center Tree

The tree is lit from early December until early January. It is extremely crowded every evening — this is a stop where the car circling while you walk in is a genuine advantage.

Photo stop Shoot from the Fifth Avenue side looking down the Channel Gardens — you get the tree framed with the angel sculptures leading into it.

  2. Fifth Avenue holiday windows

The department store windows run roughly from 49th to 59th Street. Walkable in half an hour if you don't queue for the busiest ones.

Photo stop Shoot straight on and close to kill the reflections, or deliberately include them — half-angle shots just look like glare.

  3. Bryant Park Winter Village

Free-to-enter market stalls and a skating rink where admission is free if you bring your own skates. A good warm-up stop before heading to Brooklyn.

Photo stop The rink with the surrounding towers behind it, shot from the eastern edge after dark.

  4. Dyker Heights, Brooklyn

The main event. The heaviest displays run between 11th and 13th Avenues, roughly 83rd to 86th Streets, with 84th Street between 11th and 12th the most famous block. Walking it takes 30–60 minutes.

Photo stop Arrive around 5pm — the lights are on but there's still a little blue in the sky, which stops the houses blowing out against pure black.

Dyker Heights is a residential neighbourhood, not an attraction — there's no admission and no organisers. Displays are put up by homeowners at their own pace, so the exact houses change year to year.

Guides for this tour

Dyker Heights Christmas Lights: When to Go and Which Streets to Walk The Brooklyn neighbourhood that decorates harder than anywhere else in New York — exactly which blocks to walk, what time to arrive, how to avoid the December crush, and how to visit without annoying the people who live there.

Christmas Lights Tour: common questions

When are the Dyker Heights Christmas lights on?

Most displays go up around Thanksgiving and run through the first week of January, switching on at dusk — roughly 5pm in December — and off around 9–11pm depending on the house. There's no official schedule; homeowners set their own.

When should we go to avoid crowds?

Late November, or a Monday-to-Thursday evening. The first two weeks of December are the busiest stretch of the entire New York holiday season, and weekend evenings in Dyker Heights are shoulder to shoulder on the pavement.

Is there a charge to see the lights?

No. Dyker Heights is a residential neighbourhood and the displays are free to walk past. Do keep to the pavement, keep noise down, and don't walk onto anyone's property — people live there.

How long do we need in Dyker Heights?

Thirty to sixty minutes of walking covers the main blocks. Add travel time from Manhattan, which is 45–60 minutes each way depending on traffic.

Can we see the lights from the car?

Partly — you'll see plenty through the window, but the best displays reward getting out and walking a few blocks. In practice most groups drive between areas and walk the Dyker Heights blocks themselves.

Is this suitable for young children?

Very — it's one of the more child-friendly things to do in December. Bring warmer layers than you think you need; you'll be standing still outdoors more than you expect.

Do we need to book far ahead?

For December weekends, yes. This is the single most compressed demand period of the year for New York car services, and the good time slots go weeks out.
